Change in parking hours in downtown Montréal

On Friday, April 14, Montréal centre-ville was surprised to learn that the City of Montreal had approved major changes to parking pricing schedules in the downtown area.

The changes, due to take effect this week, mean that on-street parking will be charged from 8am to 11pm Monday to Friday, from 9am to 11pm on Saturday and from 9am to 6pm on Sunday.

Currently, on-street parking in the downtown area is charged from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

New measures without notice or consultation

In the past, the public and merchants were consulted on the subject of modular pricing for downtown parking. This initiative met with consensus, and Montréal centre-ville is in favour of introducing such a pricing system based on best practices. Unfortunately, this was not the case with the new measures to modify the pricing schedule.

“We are surprised and disappointed by this change in fare schedule without notice or consultation. While we welcome the city’s decision to temporarily suspend this measure, we are asking the City of Montreal for a moratorium of at least one year before any changes are made to the downtown fare schedule, to allow for proper evaluation and, most importantly, sufficient notice to allow for adjustment of habits,” said Glenn Castanheira, Executive Director of Montréal centre-ville.

Weekend fare schedule change downtown

Montréal centre-ville is firmly opposed to the proposed change in fare schedule. “Our downtown is recovering remarkably well from the pandemic, but its economic health remains very fragile. This is not the time to implement new restrictive measures across the entire territory,” concluded the general manager of Montréal centre-ville.
