New openings in downtown Montreal – may 2026
May is slowly settling into downtown Montreal, bringing that in-between moment where the city still can’t quite decide if it’s spring or summer. Terraces are starting to fill up again, flowers are popping up everywhere, and people finally feel like staying out a little longer, even if the weather is still taking its time. Between Mother’s Day, the return of outdoor events, and the growing buzz around Grand Prix weekend, downtown is gradually slipping back into its summer energy.
And as always, a few new spots have joined the neighbourhood. Here are 5 new places to check out in downtown Montreal this May.
Taiyo Cité – three floors dedicated to Japanese cuisine
After Longueuil and Brossard, Taiyo is now opening a third location downtown with a brand new concept spread across three floors. Each level offers a completely different experience, turning the restaurant into a full Japanese dining destination.
The first floor focuses on all-you-can-eat Japanese BBQ with grills built right into the tables. The second is dedicated to all-you-can-eat sushi, while an Izakaya & Bar will soon open on the third floor. On certain nights, immersive wall projections also add to the atmosphere.

Metcalfe Montréal – a new boutique hotel in the heart of downtown
Metcalfe Montréal has officially opened its doors inside a historic building that’s been completely reimagined. This new boutique hotel blends elegant design with a relaxed atmosphere, featuring thoughtfully designed rooms, bright common spaces, and warm service inspired by the energy of the neighbourhood.
The hotel is also home to Benjamin, a new Parisian-style steakhouse already shaping up to be one of downtown’s liveliest new spots. To celebrate the opening, Metcalfe is currently offering a special package including a one-night stay, a $150 hotel credit, bubbles in your room, and a few extra touches to turn a simple night downtown into a proper little escape.

Falafel Blvd – Laval’s popular spot arrives downtown
Already well loved in Laval, Falafel Blvd has now opened a new location in downtown Montreal. The restaurant serves fresh and generous Mediterranean street food, including falafels, shawarmas, colourful bowls, and pita sandwiches made daily with high-quality ingredients.
The space features a modern vibe with plenty of seating, an open kitchen, and a setup that works just as well for a quick lunch as it does for a casual dinner. House-made sauces, crisp vegetables, and soft fresh pita tie the whole experience together.

Alimentari – an Italian-style coffee break downtown
Alimentari brings a little taste of Italy to downtown Montreal with a concept that blends café culture, Italian grocery essentials, and a gourmet counter all in one place. It’s the kind of spot where you stop for a quick espresso and somehow leave with imported treats and a bag full of Italian staples.
On the menu: house-made pastries, paninis, gelato, and plenty of Italian products to take home. The atmosphere feels like a small neighbourhood café in Italy, where people gather for a quick coffee, a short chat, or a simple mid-day pause.

Onigiri Shop – the famous onigiris arrive downtown
Already a go-to spot for onigiri lovers across Montreal, Onigiri Shop is now opening a new location downtown. The concept is simple: fresh onigiris made daily with a wide variety of fillings, from spicy salmon classics to more creative options.
The viral $4.99 onigiris everyone’s been talking about are, of course, on the menu, with several flavours available each day. You’ll also find OniDON bowls, soups, sides, and Japanese drinks to round out the meal.
