The Torlonia Collection: Masterpieces of Roman Sculpture

14 March - 19 July

Sculptures romaines antiques de la collection Torlonia exposées au MBAM à Montréal

A legendary collection of Roman sculpture downtown Montreal

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts presents The Torlonia Collection: Masterpieces of Roman Sculpture, an exhibition devoted to one of the most prestigious private collections of antiquities in the world. Presented for the first time in North America, the exhibition brings together an exceptional selection of sculptures from the collection assembled in the 19th century by Prince Alessandro Torlonia.

Busts, statues and bas-reliefs offer a glimpse into the artistic world of ancient Rome and highlight the importance of these works in the history of art.

Ancient masterpieces up close

The exhibition features nearly 60 marble and bronze sculptures depicting figures from Roman mythology and history. Among them are portraits of emperors such as Marcus Aurelius, Hadrian and Commodus, as well as representations of deities including Hercules, Bacchus and Cupid.

Presented at the MMFA as the final stop of its North American tour, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to admire these ancient works before they return to Italy.
