Rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest redevelopment: Montréal centre-ville welcomes adjustments announced by the city

MONTREAL, April 10, 2025 – Montréal centre-ville welcomes the adjustments made to Phase 3 of the Rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest redevelopment project, announced today by the Ville de Montréal. These modifications notably result from strong mobilization led by Montréal centre-ville in close collaboration with businesses and key stakeholders in the area, to ensure the project’s review and modification.
Since the initial announcement last November, Montréal centre-ville members have expressed numerous concerns regarding the potential impacts of permanent pedestrianization on their commercial activities. At their request, the organization undertook an in-depth analysis of the project, as well as sustained dialogue with City representatives to propose corrections, including a more progressive and concerted approach based on best practices observed in Montreal and internationally.
The adjustments to the redevelopment project and the establishment of a working committee bringing together Montréal centre-ville and other partners represent concrete progress. It will now be possible to review the proposed developments and plan, collaboratively, the gradual implementation of pedestrianization projects, taking into account the economic and operational realities of the downtown area, as well as the evolution of the commercial fabric and visitor habits.
For a project of this magnitude to succeed, it must be carried out with and for the merchants and businesses. The openness demonstrated in recent weeks, as well as the commitment to progress in stages, are steps in the right direction
