An Artistic Journey into Inuit Art for Families

From March 1 to 9, 2025, experience atauttikkut – ensemble, a unique artistic journey along Sherbrooke Street West. Hosted by the McCord Stewart Museum, La Guilde, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, this free event invites families to immerse themselves in Inuit art through 3 stops featuring captivating exhibitions and hands-on creative workshops. Stretching less than a kilometer, this fascinating journey celebrates the culture, stories, and traditions of the Far North.

Stop 1: McCord Stewart Museum

Discover the breathtaking works of Manasie Akpaliapik, an Inuit artist from Ikpiarjuk (Arctic Bay), in the exhibition Manasie Akpaliapik: Inuit Universe. Marvel at his sculptures carved from whale bone, caribou antler, and stone, reflecting Arctic legends, cultural values, and wildlife. Families can also join The Arctic Story Factory workshop to craft tales inspired by Inuit legends and the Textures of an Imagined Journey workshop, where participants create postcards depicting the landscapes of Nunavut.

Stop 2: La Guilde

Continue your exploration with the exhibition Jessie Oonark and Pudlo Puldlat – Inuit Art Cooperatives (and beyond), showcasing these renowned artists and the evolution of Inuit art. Participate in the workshop Printing in Color: in the Spirit of Jessie Oonark, where you can create your own linocut inspired by the techniques and stories of traditional Inuit art.

Stop 3: Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

Conclude your journey with the family workshop Energy of the Heart, focusing on themes of life and community. Explore the exhibition uummaqutik: Essence of Life, featuring contemporary and historical Inuit artworks and installations. Finally, be captivated by ulitsuak | marée montante | rising tide, a video work by Glenn Gear projected nightly on the Hornstein Pavilion façade, evoking the fragility of ecosystems through kaleidoscopic Inuit-inspired motifs.
