In 2015, the provincial government and the municipality announced the granting of tourist zone status to downtown Montreal.
The advantages of tourist zone status
Following a request made in 2008 to the City of Montreal by the Société de développement commercial Montréal centre-ville, the downtown area was granted tourist zone status. With this status, retail businesses located in this zone can open their doors without any restrictions in order to take full advantage of customer traffic, and are free to determine their own opening hours and days.
Extended opening hours not only meet the needs of different customer groups, but also enable the zone’s business community to adapt to changing circumstances and business opportunities.
